Description

Agate is a variety of chalcedony (quartz). It is created by successive layers of chalcedony, each of which has a different color. Thus, making a cut in the agate, we see the thin parallel curved lines of the chalcedony. According to Theophrastus, the Greeks gave this mineral its name from the river of the same name.
