Agate was named after the river Agate of Sicily, where it was first discovered. Agate was a well-known stone in the ancient world. In Greece but also in Rome, it was carved in the shape of the head of dog, wolf or lion, and they wore it as protection against hunger and epidemics. Pliny says that agate could prevent storms. It is said that Orpheus wore an agate amulet when he descended to the underworld. In Ghana, even today, they believe it protects against snake bites and mental illnesses.
