Lapis Lazuli may be referred to simply as lapis, or earlier lazuli.
It is an opaque rock of striking blue color. It is a rock and not a mineral, because it contains the following minerals: Lazurite Sodalite, Calcite and Iron Pyrite. Iron pyrite often appears like golden shimmering specks on the surface of the stone and is one of the elements of beauty and uniqueness of this precious stone.
The Egyptians carved scarabs and amulets in lapis, as early as 3300 BC; the Assyrians and the Babylonians made seals, and the Akkadian and Sumerian poets glorified it as the stone that gives royal splendor. The ancient Greeks, the Romans and the Bible called the lapis sapphire. Theophrastus and Pliny describe sapphire as a stone containing dust or specks of gold. This description corresponds to the lapis with the golden spots of the iron pyrite.
